What does shapewear do?

Shapewear is designed to provide temporary smoothing or compression under clothing. The effect depends on the garment's construction, compression level, coverage and fit; it does not permanently change body shape.

Should I size down for stronger compression?

No. Choose from your current measurements and the size guidance for the specific product. Deliberately sizing down can make shapewear uncomfortable and may cause rolling, pinching or an uneven fit.

Evidence and fit note

Research on compression garments shows that the pressure a garment applies can change with garment type, size and body position, while broader reviews identify garment fit and material properties as important determinants of pressure and comfort. These studies examine compression garments in sports or medical contexts, not every fashion shapewear product, so they should not be interpreted as evidence of a medical benefit from retail shapewear.
